China’s ambitious plan to create a satellite internet network to rival SpaceX’s Starlink, known as the “GW” project, has faced challenges right from the start. The project, which aims to provide global internet coverage, has encountered technical issues, regulatory hurdles, and fierce competition.

One of the major setbacks for the GW project was the failure of the first satellite launch in May 2021. The satellite, named “Hongyun-2,” experienced a malfunction shortly after liftoff and eventually lost contact with ground control.

In addition to technical challenges, the GW project has also faced criticism and skepticism from industry experts. Many believe that China’s strict regulatory environment and lack of transparency could hinder the project’s success.

Furthermore, Elon Musk’s Starlink has already established a strong presence in the satellite internet market, making it difficult for the GW project to compete. With over 1,700 satellites in orbit and plans to launch thousands more, Starlink has a significant head start.
